Harvest Monday 5/16/11

I am excited about harvest Monday this week as I actually got to harvest something from the garden.  I picked 2 3/4 pounds of rhubarb

8 jars of strawberry/rhubarb jam.  Wish I had the strawberries to harvest also but hopefully next year.  Also made a strwberry rhubarb torte plus froze about a pint.
Well didn't harvest these candy onions this week but rather last fall but used them in dinner last night
Again more parsley from the Areo Garden
Thyme from the aero garden.  These three items went together to make the bordelaise sauce on the steak for dinner last night.

Picked basil from the aero garden all week for my salads.

Don't forget to visit
Our hostess and see what everyone else has harvested for Harvest Monday.

  1. Nice harvest of rhubarb and sounds like you put it to good use right away.

  4. I'm going to plant some rhubarb this year, for the first time. How long has yours been growing?

  5. I just finally put in a rhubarb plant this year, should have done it years ago!

I didn't realize candy onions would keep all winter. I always plant Walla Walla Sweet, but they aren't good for storage at all. Maybe next year I'll try Candy, I noticed our local farm stand has been selling them for the past couple of years, replacing the Walla Wallas.

  6. Villager-I went to my old house where I had rhubarb for years and dug some and moved it here to my new garden last spring. I didn't pick any last year but have started now. It loves cow manure. I just dug a trench, put some manure in the bottom, scuffed some dirt over it and literally threw the plants in and covered them.

AG-Last year was the first year I grew Candy Onions. I stated them from seed in the house. They are not suppose to be a keeper however I heat the workshop at the back of my garage all winter and maintain the temp at about 40. Put them in an onion bag and hung it up on a nail. They are just starting to sprout. I did dry the good on a hardware cloth frame first.

  8. Oh I love rhubarb. I never planted it at the last house but have here. I hope it grows well. It didn't get the best part of the garden.

  10. Barbie-I thought the color was a little unappealing but then what do I know.

Daphne-hope your rhubarb does well for you. It doesn't ask for much except some cow manure every year. What I have hear I was digging out of grass at my old place. It hadn't been touched in six years.

RAndom Gardener I love the candy onion. I start it from seed but this year my plants didn't do well or I found some Valencia locally so that is what I will have this year. The candy is not considered a keeper so I guess I have been lucky.

  11. WOW DELiCIOUS! I used to enjoy rhubarb pie back in Manitoba. Is it better for cold weather? more suitable?
I am not sure if it will grow here in CAlifornia :)

  13. Yum strawberry rhubarb jam! Now I definitely have to put a rhubarb plant in this year. The plant I found at the plots turned out to be a weed :(

  14. Your onions look quite good for being in storage all winter! Nice rhubarb harvest - that's one that we don't grow, but perhaps in the future...
