Harvest Monday 5/30/11

Still nothing planted in the garden so am stretching to say that I have harvested anything but every little bit counts.
That little 1/2 pint of horseradish was just a teaser last week so went to my sister-in-laws and dug more.  Since I gave it to her in the first place I guess I still have partial ownership.
Coarse ground and ready for the blender
At last with a few tears 2 more pints.  Now where can I scrounge more roots?
Second picking of the rhubarb. 4.75 pounds.  Gave it away.

Onion bed is finally planted

A project that started last fall with Egyptian Walking Onions is finally complete.  I have been dieing to plant something but between the rain and cold weather haven't even gotten a garden ready to plant except the one raised bed for onions.

The Valencia onions plants from seed.
They needed a haircut before getting planted
Haircut produced 1.25 ounces of onion tops for salad
Back row is the Egyptian Walking onions planted last fall
50 Sweet Spanish onion sets planted 0n 5/12.  They all came up.
 56 Valencia Onion plants planted
Balance of the area was filled with 80 white onion sets
Love the planting jig.  Made quick work of all of the planting.

My Harvest for Wednesday

I have spent a lot of the day working in the vegetable garden getting it ready to till.  Cut out a lot of briers along the fence line and harvested my most prolific crop of the year and every year.  Wanted to save these for Monday Harvest and weigh them in but decided Daphane might not appreciate my humor.

Two load isn't bad.  This is my winter crop of rocks.  Others grow spinach and the such but I grow rocks.  I still have 3 large ones that would take 2 men and a boy to lift.  They will have to be rolled out of the garden before I till it.  It is only about 30' to the gate so that is for another day.

Harvest Monday 5/23/11

Don't laugh but this was the best I could do this week.

My one horseradish root but I got 1/2 pint of ground horseradish.  That will last me about a day.

Busy Day

Had a busy day yesterday.  Did a lot of potting of perennials.  Had an hour rain delay but the rest of the time was in the greenhouse.
These Alaskan Shasta daisies were some that self seeded last spring.

Lily of the Valley that I dug a year ago and have just been sitting in a clump next to my garage.

This clump of hosta have been sitting beside my garage for 4 years.  Decided I should plant them up.

Had a few roots left of the Lily of the Valley that I didn't pot.  Have this gravel area behind my shed that is basically useless so got some old potting soil from the pile where I empty planters and threw the roots in.  They will grow and multiply for my crop for next year.
Some of the hosta from the first clump plus some I dug last spring that was sitting on the other side of my garage.

Greenhouse part 2

These are the vegetables I have been growing in the greenhouse in window boxes hoping to get some early vegetables.  Have never done this before so will be interesting.

Update in the greenhouse part 1

I finally opened up the greenhouses for the first time in a week since it did stop raining for a while and was very muggy.  I was surprised at how the plants had grown despite not having any sun in about a week and cool temperatures in the 50's every day.

Harvest Monday 5/16/11

I am excited about harvest Monday this week as I actually got to harvest something from the garden.  I picked 2 3/4 pounds of rhubarb

8 jars of strawberry/rhubarb jam.  Wish I had the strawberries to harvest also but hopefully next year.  Also made a strwberry rhubarb torte plus froze about a pint.
Well didn't harvest these candy onions this week but rather last fall but used them in dinner last night
Again more parsley from the Areo Garden
Thyme from the aero garden.  These three items went together to make the bordelaise sauce on the steak for dinner last night.

Picked basil from the aero garden all week for my salads.

Don't forget to visit
Our hostess and see what everyone else has harvested for Harvest Monday.

May Bloom Day

I guess I am a day late but am just learning all this fun of blogging.  Being in zone 4 not much is happening this year in May.  Have had tons of rain and very cool temps but do have a few things.  Hope you enjoy.

Used the planting jig yesterday

I had some onion sets to get in the ground so tried out the new jig.  It worked great.  I planted 50 sets in less than 10 minutes.  Hope it works as well for seed.

A walk through the woods

This afternoon I took a little walk through me woods and had the camera with me.
We call it a Shad tree it blossoms just before the apple trees do and from a distance looks like an apple blossom
 Blossoms up close

 A couple of wild Trillium.
Have no idea the correct name but here they are called Dogtooth Violets.  Not a real clear shot.

Some fiddle heads just waking up for the summer.
