Harvest Monday 02/27/12

This week still have nothing to report for a harvest but do have some basil that could be picked in the Aero garden and have 4 buds on the tomato plant that is growing in it.  Peppers are slow but growing.  Will plant it completely different this summer for hopefully a winter harvest of tomatoes and peppers.

Did finally get a change to work on the layout of the Kitchen Garden here next to the house.  I usually put my fine seed in here but am changing things this year.

Don't forget to stop by our Host, Daphne's Dandelions to see what others are harvesting or plotting for their up coming garden.

  1. Do you find your broccoli grows well in the one foot spacing? I always debate with myself over broccoli spacing.

  2. looks like there is going to be a lot of great veggies in your garden this year

  3. I love playing around with diagrams. Always easier to change them BEFORE the planting begins. ;-)

  4. Looking good! I really need to plan out where I am going to plant things. That is a step I always seem to overlook.

  5. That's a lot of onions and radishes are they different varieties?

  6. You are on top if the work. I look forward to reading about your harvests.

  7. I always try to grow a lot of basil too - but I've had problems with mine this year and only have a couple of plants doing well - enough for day to day harvesting but I wont have much to store unfortunately.

  8. Daphne, I plant a lot of things closer together than they recommend. Even in my big garden I have problem finding places to walk between rows. Have never had a problem with the broccoli and that is about how close I plant it each year.

Mrs. P I am sure hoping so but with trying all new seed this year who knows.

Barbie, unfortunately I usually end up changing them as I plant. Especially the big garden as there is no way to have an accurate measurement with all its juts etc. going around trees and boulders.

Prairie Cat, my plotting is more so maybe I will get better at rotating. I know I won't probably end up with the number of plants I had planned on.

Norma, those onions will be sets that I will use for scallions. They will be all the same kind. I am sure I will be sharing them with my daughter and possibly the food bank. Have 100 plants at the community plots also that I am hoping for good storage onions for next winter. The radishes will be what ever I find at the store for seed. I will not be planting them all at once.

Thanks Jody, I hope I have a harvest to talk about. One never knows living in this part of the woods what the season will bring.

    1st Man thanks

Liz, I had 3 pods of basil in my aero garden earlier this winter and have been over run with basil. Have 2 pods going now and will be picking soon and have no idea what I will do with it.

  9. thats a nice little plan. my problem with some of these online planners is they are sized for square foot gardening and you cannot make them work with offset hexagons instead of the straight rows. But could come in handy to help figure out the amount of bed space for each thing.

  10. You have some good eating planned in that kitchen garden. Mixing it up is good - every now and then we hit on just the right combo of things and are rewarded for being willing to try other things.

  11. You're going to have lots of food for the kitchen soon. I can't wait for the brassicas to come in. They're my favorite thing to harvest.

  12. Mary I only do square foot gardening in my raised beds. This garden and my big garden I just use the square foot as a guide line as to how many plants I can plant and where they might fit.

Laura, I have way more planned for my gardens than DB and I will ever eat so guess I will be giving a lot away. What family doesn't want will go to the food pantry in town.

Jody, I hear you on the brassicas, I love them but am afraid it is a long way off before I will be harvesting any fresh.
