Harvest Monday 01/16/12

I have no harvest this week however the basil will be ready in another few days for a nice picking again.
This week ordered most of my seed for the garden however I only did half of my order to Bakers Creek.  I must has been sleeping while doing it so will finish that today.

For the first time this year I am going to try and do cost vs. harvest which I have never done before. So far I have it on the computer and will be posting it here shortly.  Still learning this blog thing so takes a while.

This year everything I am growing is open pollinating so have to get busy on my layout to prevent cross pollination.  I was pleased to learn this week that I will have 2 plots at the community garden this year so that will increase my space and give me a place to plant some things away from here that might cross pollinate.

I did receive my second aero garden and have a couple of tomato seed and a couple of pepper seed in it with the seed starter plugs to see just how it is going to work.  By summer I hope to have the extender light for one of them so I can grow peppers and tomatoes over the winter.  Did some research and have found so recipes for making your own nutrient mix for them so that can save some money.

This post is part of Harvest Monday which can be found at our host Daphne's Dandelions every Monday Morning.  Stop by and see what others are growing and harvesting.

  1. I'm trying to wrap my head around planning this years garden as well. While I do love the process and find great hope in it all, it can feel a bit overwhelming at times. Happy planning!!!

  2. Enjoy the planning and ordering process - it is one of the things that gets me through the dark days of winter. Glad to hear you got the second Aero Garden - will be interested to hear how that goes.

  3. BG I should spend more time doing than planning but with the temperature outside right now it seems like planning is all I will get for a while. I should be out snow blowing but at 14 degrees it doesn't sound to exciting so will sit here and work on my expense and harvest charts.

Laura, I am a great planner but not always as good at carrying out my plans. It looks like tomorrow I will have 2 tomato plants germinated in the soil plugs in the aero garden. Am hoping I can grow both tomatoes and peppers this next winter.

  4. Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm intrigued by the portable greenhouses you mention...I'd like to see some pictures.
Why have I only just found your blog? Growing and cooking are my two main interests (oh, and photography!).

    1. Mark, glad you found the blog. I will have to do some looking to see what I have for pictures of the greenhouses. When I find them I will email them to you or let you know where you can see them on the internet. Most of my cooking posts are on Thursday with Thursday's kitchen Cupboard. That is everyone sharing recipes and how they use the harvests from their garden.

  5. I'd love to have some more info on how your aero garden does. We have thought about buying one but weren't sure it was worth the effort.

  6. Glad to learn you received your second aeero garden. Is it bigger than your first one? How large are your community plots? I am not good at planning, get started but never finish, going to give it try again this year.

    1. Norma, the community plots are 4'x12' each. I am learning to square foot garden in them. Had pretty good success last year. The 2 aero gardens are the same size the 7 pod. However I plan to order the extended light so I can grow tomatoes and peppers for next winter. That light extends 24".

  8. I think it is great to have more space but it also means more work and by myself I am hoping I can keep up with it. The weeding here at home in the big garden is my biggest problem.

  9. I'm too scared to a do a cost vs harvest analysis just in case I don't like the results. Good for you that your going to attempt it though.

  10. I'm busy ordering and planning too. It is a nice thing to do during the cold winter months. Not that this winter has been very cold, but still.

  11. I think a cost vs. harvest will be very interesting. I have ordered seeds, but I don't know yet how big a garden I'll have! I'm not the best at planning!

  12. We've never thought much about cross-pollination until this year. We're using only open-pollination seeds like you this year. Good luck.
