Harvest Monday 04/23/12

Boy have I been MIA.  Just seems to be no time to get here anymore as gardening season approaches the North Country.  However will warmer weather the ground finally thawed and what did appear but horseradish. So I have had one harvest for the season.

2 1/4 pounds.

The seedlings are doing quite well this year.  After years of growing I learned something new this year.  I have never used a shade cloth on my greenhouses even when in business as our spring sun isn't that intense.  However when I was ready to move them from the lights inside to the greenhouse I didn't have any overcast days to do it so put the shade cloth on one greenhouse.  I can't believe the difference in the strength and quality of the plants this year.

I still have another 6 weeks before anything will go in the ground except maybe the brassica.  The brassica are a bit small but I am sure will be ready.  They were just transplanted.

Our weather here is still very spring like without many warm days and night are still around or below freezing many nights.

Be sure to visit our host, Daphne's Dandelions, to see what others are growing and harvesting.

  3. Very nice seed sets! And the horseradish looks delicious. You'll get lots of great food from that.

  4. That horseradish is huge. I grow it but mine is always much smaller. It clearly likes your climate. Interesting that you harvest in Spring, I've always harvested in Autumn.

  5. Isn't it funny that no matter how many years we garden, there is always something new to learn! Your seedlings look beautiful.

  6. Love the horseradish harvest. Someday I'm going to have to put some in. I love the stuff, but really don't use it much.

  7. Thanks Robin. I can't believe the difference the shade cloth made.

Mrs. P that horseradish actually came from my old house. We had lots of it growing throughout the garden at one time. This was growing inside my DS's dog kennel. It had not been dug in years. All of the scraps and tops are now planted in my garden here.

Jody thanks the seedlings are doing great now if winter would leave so I could get outside and get things done. I love horseradish.

Thanks Marsha, I wish I had more time to be here but there aren't enough hours in the day doing everything by myself.

Liz that horseradish is very old and I was completely surprised that it wasn't woody. I will never see any that size again. I actually prefer the smaller roots, I think they are hotter. There are differences of opinion on what time of the year it should be dug. I dig as soon as it shows slightly out of the ground in the spring. Have never tried it in the fall.

HG thanks and yes if we don't learn something everyday in life we are letting the world slip by us.

Daphne, I don't use a lot of horseradish but do love it. I did freeze some that is just coarse ground and will pull that out during the winter and finish it with vinegar in the blender and it will be just as good as what I made now as it sits in the refrig it usually looses its bite before I use it all up.

  9. Bee Girl thanks for the welcome. Blogging seems to be on a back burner lately with so much to do to get ready for spring. Horseradish just grows, it doesn't care where you put it and the more you chop it up and dig it the more it grows. We used to have it throughout the garden as after we dug it each year we would till the garden and every little piece that was touching dirt would grow a new root.

  10. Glad to see you back. Your seedlings are looking so healthy and happy. Did you get snow on Monday or Tuesday? We only had rain, lots and lots of rain, fortunately no flooding.

  11. Hi Norma, so difficult this time of year to find time to blog. Weather isn't cooperating on getting things done outside which is driving me nuts. WE did luck out with no accumulation of snow but have had rain, hail, snow and sun all week with a very cold wind. Tired of running the heat in 2 greenhouses. The next 5 nights are to be in the low thirties and high twenties.

I do get your blog on email and read it but haven't really had time to respond to much of anyone.

  12. Glad to see you posting again, was hoping you were just busy. The seedlings look healthy and abundant and that horseradish is monstrous sized! I like horseradish but a little goes a very long way for me.

  14. I'm looking at building a greenhouse in my back yard, so your post definitely has me thinking. Perhaps I should include some sort of shade break for the plants!
